I love when something has a good story behind it. Our new house is known around town as “The Wizard of Oz House”. The former owner was an artist. He handcrafted beautiful birdhouses. He also created a legit yellow brick road, with a life-size Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and Wicked Witch of the West on the property. Yes, a YELLOW. BRICK. ROAD.
When we first looked at the property during the open house, the realtors made the owner take down the characters for fear that potential buyers would run away before they even pulled into the driveway. We had no idea about the house being “famous” in the town. As we were looking at the property, I was enamored with the whole vibe of the property. We walked to the front of the property and began walking on the brick pathway that was not really yellow anymore. We thought it was a strange spot for a path and were trying to figure out why it was there. As we were on it, I said to Steve, “I feel like I’m on the yellow brick road.” With that the realtor turned to us…”Funny you should say that.”
She went on to explain that it actually was a recreation of the Wizard of Oz. There was an article written in the New York Times about it.
When you type our address into Google Maps, this is what you see…
How friggin cool is that?!?! Not many people can say they google their address and they see the Wizard of Oz!
The characters are no longer there and the yellow brick has faded, but the spirit of Oz still remains. You can still see hints of yellow on the brick and faces are still on the trees. Here’s what it looks like now:
We plan on keeping what remains of Oz…maybe even repainting the bricks. I think this history makes our home that much more awesome.
There’s no place like home,
